Abraham - A man with no props

From Genesis 11:27-12:9 we're introduced to Abraham. God chose Abraham because he was a man with no props. There are five areas in which Abraham was unable to prop himself up before God.

1 He was a man without God ~ Abraham and his family worshiped the moon. ~ God called and spoke to Abraham and told Abraham to follow God. ~ God is calling men today to follow Him (John 3:16; Matthew 11:28-30).

2 He was a man without a child ~ The very fact that he and Sarah were childless and Sarah was barren was one of the reasons God chose Abraham to be the father of the Jewish nation. ~ What would've seemed as a reason not to be chosen was the reason God chose them, because their child would be the result of God's faithfulness. ~ We may look at our inadequacies and think we're unusable to God but our handicaps make us usable by God because God is the one who strengthens us (2 Cor 12:9).

3 He was a man without a home ~ God told him to leave the land his family occupied as God would lead him to Canaan, the promised land. ~ As a christian this world isn't our home but were just passing through.

4 He was a man without a family ~ Abraham had family but God told him to leave his family as his family and their moon worship would be a hindrance to the worship of the one true God. ~ A christian belongs to the family of God.

5 He was a man without promises ~ God made a seven-fold promise to Abraham in Genesis 12:2,3. ~ These promises blessed Abraham in ways he never would've been blessed without following God. ~ God has blessed his children with the promises contained in the bible.
